In times of uncertainty and challenge, we are often faced with a choice: to shrink back in fear or to step forward in faith. The Bible reminds us time and time again that courage is not about the absence of fear, but about trusting in God’s presence and promises despite our fears. One powerful verse that speaks to this truth is found in Joshua:
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9
Joshua was stepping into new territory, leading the people of Israel after Moses. He faced immense pressure, uncertainty, and opposition. Yet, God’s command to him was clear—be strong, be courageous, and trust that He is always present. This same encouragement is for us today. Whether we are facing personal struggles, stepping into a new calling, or navigating difficulties in our communities, God is with us every step of the way.
Faith requires action.
Joshua did not see the miracle before he moved—he had to step forward in faith first. Many of us wait for the perfect conditions, a clear sign, or absolute certainty before taking action. But often, God calls us to walk in obedience even when we do not yet see the outcome. Just as Joshua led the Israelites to cross the Jordan River before the waters parted, we too must trust that God will provide as we move forward in faith.
Fear is one of the greatest tools the enemy uses to hold us back. It makes us doubt, hesitate, and sometimes even retreat from God’s plans for us. However, as followers of Christ, we are not called to seek approval from the world or to remain in comfort. We are called to be bold, to stand firm in our beliefs, and to move forward with confidence, knowing that God’s plans for us are greater than our fears.
This call to courage is not just for our own spiritual growth
it is also for those around us.
We are meant to lead by example, to encourage others, and to invest in the next generation. The book of Judges reminds us of the consequences when leaders fail to raise up new ones: “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25). A lack of leadership leads to confusion and chaos, but when we stand firm in faith, we help guide others to God’s truth.
As we reflect on Joshua’s journey, let us ask ourselves: Are we living in faith or in fear? Are we trusting in God’s promises, or are we waiting for visible proof before taking the next step? Challenges will come, but they are signs of growth. Just as a heartbeat has peaks and valleys, our spiritual journey will have highs and lows. A flat line means no life—but as long as we are pressing on, we are alive in Christ!
Let this be an encouragement to you today: Be strong. Be courageous. Trust that God is with you wherever you go. Step forward in faith, and you will see His hand guiding you.
