“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God.”
Psalm 42:1
Standing beside the rushing water of Fall Creek Falls in Tennessee, spending time there with my brother Mike, I found myself thinking about a verse I have read so many times: “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God.” The sound of the water was all around us, and one thought kept coming to my heart: we often come to the Word of God because we are thirsty—but what if God gives us His Word not only to refresh us, but also to prepare us for battle?
And standing there, I thought about how easily we can forget this when life becomes difficult.
We know where to turn when we need comfort, and praise God, His Word is full of comfort. But God has given us His Word for more than comfort. He has given us truth to stand upon when fear, temptation, discouragement, or the voice of the enemy comes against us. God has not left you defenseless. He has given you His Spirit, His promises, His truth—and He has placed a weapon in your hands.
There is an old illustration sometimes told about the deer and the snake, where water becomes part of the deer’s struggle against its enemy. As I looked at those falls, that picture reminded me of an important spiritual truth. The water we desperately need is the Word of God, and we do not come to it only because our souls need refreshing. We come because there is a spiritual battle around us, and we need to be filled with the truth of God.
Paul explains this beautifully in Ephesians 6 when he describes the armor of God. He speaks about the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the readiness of the Gospel of peace, the shield of faith, and the helmet of salvation. These are given to protect us and enable us to stand. But then Paul gives the believer something different:
“the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God
Ephesians 6:17
Think about that for a moment. The Word of God is not only something that strengthens and protects you when trouble comes. It is a sword God places in your hand. This is why knowing Scripture matters so deeply. When fear tells you that God has forgotten you, His Word answers with truth. When condemnation tells you that your past defines you, His Word reminds you who you are in Yeshua. When circumstances tell you there is no hope, His promises speak louder than what your eyes can see.
Yeshua Himself showed us this in the wilderness.
When the enemy came to tempt Him, He did not answer according to emotion or circumstance. Again and again, His response was rooted in Scripture: “It is written.” There is something so important for us in those words. Yeshua knew the Word, and when the battle came, the Word was already there.
This is why we cannot wait until the difficult day to begin filling ourselves with Scripture. We need to read it when life is peaceful. We need to meditate on it, know the promises of God, and allow His truth to take root deeply within us. Then, when fear, temptation, discouragement, or doubt comes knocking, we are not desperately searching for something to hold onto. The Word is already living inside us.
Maybe you are walking through a battle of your own right now.
Maybe there is fear, discouragement, uncertainty, or something you have been praying about for a long time. I want to remind you that God has not left you alone in that battle. He has given you His Spirit. He has given you His promises. And He has given you His Word—not simply to comfort you in the battle, but to help you stand firmly in the truth.
As I stood beside those beautiful falls in Tennessee, with the water rushing past us, Psalm 42 took on a fresh meaning for me. Yes, come thirsty to the Word of God. Let it refresh your soul, strengthen your faith, correct your path, and remind you again of who God is. But also allow His Word to prepare you to stand. A sword is useful when we know it, carry it, and are ready to use it.
So wherever you are as you read this, my prayer is that you will become thirsty again for the Word of God. Come to it when you are weary. Come when you need direction. Come when everything around you feels uncertain. Drink deeply from His truth, and remember that the God who refreshes your soul is also the God who strengthens you to stand.
The same Word that gives you water for your soul also places a sword in your hand.
May the Lord give you a deeper hunger for His Word and strengthen you through it in every season.
Shalom,
Pastor Saleem
